Born in 1986 in Hokkaido, Japan, Yusuke Norishiro graduated from Hosei University and taught at a cram school for ten years. He made his debut with the coming-of-age novel From Seventeen to Eighteen after it won the Gunzo Prize for New Writers in 2015. He has been shortlisted for the Akutagawa Prize, Japan’s highest literary honor, four times for Traveling Practice, The Ultimate Mission, Mina no arabashiri, and The Truth of It. Traveling Practice went on to win the Mishima Yukio Prize in 2020 and the Tsubota Joji Literature Prize in 2021.
Born in New York City, Takami Nieda has translated more than ten Japanese works into English. Her translations of GO by Kazuki Kaneshiro and The Color of the Sky Is the Shape of the Heart by Chesil both won the Freeman Book Award for Young Adult Literature. Other notable translations include Finger Bone by Hiroki Takahashi and the forthcoming Recovery Hippo by Michiko Aoyama. Nieda serves on the University of Washington Translation Studies Hub, mentors emerging translators, and teaches writing and literature at Seattle Central College.
Traveling Practice follows a novelist and his spirited niece as they embark on a walk across the Japanese countryside during the last days before the pandemic. Through their journey, the book masterfully explores themes of memory and the power of writing to capture fleeting moments and preserve them. Nominated for the prestigious Akutagawa Prize and winner of both the Mishima Yukio Prize and the Tsubota Joji Literature Prize, Traveling Practice’s quiet, reflective tone and focus on the characters’ inner lives elevate it beyond a simple travel story, establishing it as a significant work of literary fiction.
