Start with Cho Yeeun’s Shift in May, a dark speculative mystery/supernatural thriller translated by Yewon Jung. By the author of The New Seoul Park Jelly Massacre, the story follows a detective who uncovers a shocking secret: a killer with the sinister ability to transfer pain and disease from one person to another.
In July, get Yusuke Norishiro’s Traveling Practice, translated by Takami Nieda. This Akutagawa Prize-nominated travel fiction follows a novelist and his niece as they walk during the early pandemic, exploring memory and the power of writing.
Kim Bo-young returns in August with A Plagued Sea, translated by Sophie Bowman. This chilling Lovecraftian horror sees a bodyguard battling villagers who have been transformed into fishy monsters by an ancient plague unleashed by a catastrophic earthquake. Kim’s previous book On the Origin of Species was nominated for the National Book Award in 2021.
Then, September sees the publication of Huang Chong-Kai’s The Formosa Exchange, translated by Jeremy Tiang. This award-winning work of speculative literary fiction explores what happens when the entire population of Taiwan suddenly switches places with the residents of Cuba.
Also in September, we publish Memoirs of a Joseon Bride by Djuna. Korean sci-fi legend Djuna’s short story collection, the first published by them in the UK, includes tales of olden day vampires, futuristic genetically engineered pets, and everything in between.
In October, You-Jeong Jeong’s Bonobo, translated by An Seonjae. This speculative literary fiction novel centres on a primate researcher whose spirit merges with the body of a rescued bonobo after a car accident, leading to a fascinating exploration of the human-animal boundary. Jeong's previous novels include The Good Son and Seven Years of Darkness, both published by Hachette.
The year concludes in November with Bae Myung-hoon’s Future Past Tense, translated by Stella Kim and Sung Ryu. Hailed as a masterpiece of the Korean SF Golden Age, Future Past Tense features nine stories showcasing heart-wrenching pursuits of lost love across time and space. Bae's fourth book translated in English; this is the first short story collection.
